Market Closing: Sensex rises 874-pts Nifty Settles Near 17400

Indian equity indexes on Thursday closed higher for the second consecutive day, with gains across almost all sectors.

Reliance Industries Ltd, the index's heavyweight, rose for the third day in a row to Rs. 2,782.15. In intraday trading, the stock reached an all-time high of Rs. 2,788.80. The 30-share BSE Sensex rose 874 points, or 1.53%, to settle at 57,912, while the wider NSE Nifty up 256 points, or 1.49 percent, to 17,393.

Mid- and small-cap stocks ended the day higher, with the Nifty Midcap 100 index up 1.07 percent and the small-cap index rising 1.55 percent. The NSE’s 15 sector gauges closed the day with 14 of them in the green. The Nifty Auto and Nifty Financial Services sub-indices both beat the index, advancing 2.23 percent and 1.54 percent, respectively.

Eicher Motors was the highest Nifty gainer, rising 4.36 percent to Rs. 2,647.35. Among the gainers were Coal India, M&M, Adani Ports, and Kotak Mahindra Bank. On the Sensex platform, top gainers were Mahindra and Mahindra, Maruti, Bajaj Finserv, Asian Paints, Reliance Industries, Kotak Mahindra Bank, HDFC, TCS, Sun Pharma and  Infosys.

For the second session in a row, the HDFC Housing and HDFC Bank closed higher. HDFC Bank was up 1.45% to Rs. 1,374.25, while HDFC Housing was up 2.25 percent to Rs. 2,230.75.

Bharti Airtel, Nestle India, and Tata Steel, on the other hand, all ended up in the red.
