Indian equity indices closed lower for the second day in a row on Wednesday dragged by Financial and IT companies' stocks. The 30-share BSE Sensex fell 566 points, or 0.94 percent, to end the day at 59,610, while the broader NSE Nifty fell 150 points, or 0.83 percent, to 17,808.
Mid- and small-cap stocks finished down, with the Nifty Midcap 100 index down 0.59 percent and small-cap stocks down 0.12percent.
The NSE's 15 sector indicators all finished in the red. Nifty Financial Services and Nifty IT fell 1.59 percent and 1.63 percent, respectively, underperforming the index.
The HDFC Housing and HDFC Bank were the top Nifty losers, down 3.30 and 3.59 percent, respectively. Among the losers were HDFC Life, HCL Tech, and Tech Mahindra. Following the merger news. On the BSE, the overall market breadth was positive, with 2,198 shares rising and 1,196 falling.
On Sensex, HDFC, HCL Tech, TechM, Infosys, TCS and Mahindra and Mahindra were among the top losses. NTPC, Tata Steel, PowerGrid, Bharti Airtel, Nestle India, L&T, and SBI, on the other hand, all ended up in the green.
