Markets closed marginally higher for the day as the indices traded in a narrow range throughout the entire trading session. The market was swung between gains and losses owing to the monthly F&O expiry. The Fed in its meeting sealed economic confidence by keeping its monetary policy loose and reaffirming aggressive support through bond buying.

At the close, Sensex ended higher by 32 points at 49765, while Nifty ended up by 30 points at 14894.

Among sectoral indices, metal was the outlier in trade gaining over 4 percent. Individually, stocks from the steel space and Bajaj twins stood as top Nifty gainers. While losers included stocks like Eicher Motors, Hero Motocorp, HDFC, HCL Tech and Tata Motors.

Bank Nifty marginally underperformed the Nifty index by  0.3percent with both the indices closing on a flat note. Nifty Metal index surged 4.5percent higher as its major heavyweights like JSW Steel, TATA Steel & Sail closed around intraday highs, adding fresh long positions.

Meanwhile, Rupee rallies 29 paise to close at 74.07 (provisional) against US dollar.
