Massive fire breaks out at Terminal-1 gate of Serum Institute of India in Pune

An enormous fire broke out at Serum Institute of India (SSI) in Pune on Thursday afternoon. The blaze was reported in a building near the Terminal 1 gate of the institute. As many as ten fire tenders were rushed to spot to douse the flames. Police and local administration officials have reached the site.  More details are awaited.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray has also dialled Pune Municipal Commissioner for the ground report. He has also directed the state machinery to coordinate with the concerned authorities at the Serum Institute of India and ensure the situation is under control at the earliest. One team of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has also been deployed at the site. 

The Serum Institute of India is manufacturing anti-coronavirus vaccine called "Covishield". The vaccine developed by the Oxford University and pharmaceuticals company AstraZeneca.

It is the world's largest vaccine manufacturer. It was founded by Cyrus Poonawalla in 1966.
