Mawlong first woman to qualify Assam Civil Service passes away

Margaret Rose Mawlong, the first tribal Khasi woman Deputy Commissioner and the first tribal Khasi woman to qualify the Assam Civil Service, died on Wednesday at 82.

One of the celebrated lady bureaucrats and women leaders in Meghalaya, Mawlong breathed her last at her residence in Laitumkhrah in Shillong.In 1967, She appeared in the Assam Civil Service exams and stood second in order of merit and the top position among the tribal candidates.

After qualifying, Mawlong from 1968 to 1972 she was the Extra Assistant Commissioner in the Khasi Jaintia Hills district. She had served in various posts in the State and was also the Registrar of North Eastern Hills University. She retired in 1996 as Secretary to the Food Supplies and Consumer Affairs. Mawlong was a multifaceted lady and formed the Khasi Students’ Association, Khasi Jaintia Welfare Association, Seng Longkmie (Women’s organization) Laitumkhrah and was a member of various organisations in the State. She was also conferred the “Friends of Liberation War Heroeos” by the Bangladesh Government for her contribution for the administration of refugee camps at the border areas during the war to liberate Bangladesh.
