Lucknow: Former Uttar Pradesh CM and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) National President Mayawati has protested against the setting up of a detention centre for Dalit and tribal students in Ghaziabad. Mayawati has termed the Yogi government's move as anti-Dalit. Mayawati has also demanded the Yogi Adityanath government of UP to withdraw the decision.
Mayawati has tweeted that "Converting the multi-storey Dr BR Ambedkar SC/ST hostel built by BSP government in Ghaziabad into a detention centre for 'illegal foreigners' is very sad and highly condemnable. This is another proof of the government's anti-Dalit working style. The BSP demands government to withdraw it". The Yogi government has given its green signal to the first detention centre in the state.
There were two separate hostels for Dalit students at Nandagram in Ghaziabad. One of these hostels has been converted into a detention centre. According to Uttar Pradesh Principal Secretary Home Avnish Awasthi, the detention centre has been cleared following the centre's order. Those who are foreigners and have been languishing in jails and those who have time to return to their countries will stay in detention camps. Until the foreign people are sent to their country, they will be kept in the camp under the Social Welfare Department".
