Washington: In a recent announcement, Mazda has revealed that it will be discontinuing its MX-30 electric SUV in the U.S. market, citing lackluster sales as the driving force behind the decision.

The MX-30 made its debut in the U.S. in 2021, but it has struggled to gain traction among American consumers. According to Automotive News, a mere 66 units were sold through June of 2023, making it clear that the model has failed to capture the interest of buyers.

Despite boasting unique features such as rear-hinged back doors and a rotary range extender, the MX-30's limited 100-mile electric range has proved to be a significant drawback for potential customers.

While Mazda intends to continue offering the MX-30 in other regions like Europe and Japan, there are currently no plans to introduce a new electric vehicle to the U.S. market in the foreseeable future.

This unexpected move marks a setback for Mazda's electric vehicle ambitions, as the company had previously declared its intent to launch five new electric vehicles by 2025. However, the future of these plans now remains uncertain.

The discontinuation of the MX-30 also highlights the formidable challenges faced by automakers in the U.S. electric vehicle market. Despite a notable increase in electric vehicle sales, these eco-friendly vehicles still represent only a small fraction of the overall market share.

Mazda's decision to discontinue the MX-30 serves as a reminder that automakers must offer more compelling and competitive electric vehicles if they wish to thrive in the demanding U.S. market.
