Heritage Tourism in Meghalaya Takes Center Stage as CM Sangma Unveils Plans for a Small Museum at Old Assembly Building

Meghalaya's Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma, is spearheading efforts to harness the tourism potential embedded within the heritage sites scattered across Shillong and other regions of Meghalaya. Emphasizing this drive, Sangma revealed a proposal to establish a compact museum within a segment of Shillong's historically significant old Assembly building located in the heart of the capital city.

Speaking at the inauguration of the 11th International Tourism Mart in Shillong, Sangma highlighted the importance of tapping into the tourism prospects within the northeastern state, particularly Meghalaya, which is proudly playing host to this prestigious event.

"Implementing a comprehensive policy to amplify the appeal of these heritage sites from a tourism perspective is an integral part of our overarching strategy," Sangma expressed, responding to inquiries from PTI during the sidelines of the event.

Acknowledging Shillong's historical eminence as the former capital of undivided Assam, often referred to as the 'Scotland of the East' due to its rich historical legacy and unspoiled natural beauty, Sangma outlined the three-day Mart's aim to spotlight Meghalaya's tourism potential.

Elaborating further, Sangma touched upon the significance of the old Legislative Assembly building in Shillong, a relic from the British era, lamenting its partial destruction due to a fire almost two decades ago. He revealed plans to preserve this historical structure by converting a section of it into a museum or designated heritage site, preserving its historical significance for posterity.

"With the ongoing construction of the new assembly site, slated for inauguration by September 2024, we plan to relocate, allowing for the preservation and repurposing of this British-era architectural marvel," Sangma explained.

Highlighting additional heritage structures such as the Raj Bhavan building and Rabindranath Tagore's house, Sangma emphasized the state's commitment to conserving and showcasing its rich historical tapestry.

When questioned about the state's approach to balancing tourism development with environmental preservation, Sangma reiterated the government's dedication to sustainable tourism and ecotourism initiatives. He stressed the need for policies that alleviate undue strain on key tourist destinations, ensuring a harmonious coexistence between tourism expansion and environmental conservation.
