Srinagar: People's Democratic Party (PDP) supremo and former Jammu and Kashmir CM Mehbooba Mufti said on Monday that the Central government has "rounded up its own fold" by conducting raids by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) against Jamaat-e-Islami. Mufti said such repressive steps can go on temporarily but will have the opposite effect in the long run.

Mehbooba Mufti tweeted, "The NIA raid on jamaat is a symbolic war launched by the Government of India against the alleged "integral part". Instead of combating an ideology with a better idea, it is harshly suppressing opponents. The gap between Jammu and Kashmir and other parts of the country is getting deeper every day. It's like scoring goals in your court."

The NIA had raided several hideouts in Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday against members belonging to Jamaat-e-Islami. About two years ago, the Centre banned religious groups under anti-terrorism laws. Officials said more than 45 hideouts were raided at the houses and offices of Jamaat-e-Islami members in almost all districts of Kashmir and some districts including Ramban, Kishtwar, Doda, and Rajouri in the Jammu region.
