United States: Controversy over META's decision to prioritize profit over the safety of teenage girls has been raised by an unpublished internal document.

The tech giant was reportedly aware that Instagram was pushing girls into inappropriate content, but chose to ignore it.
This is not the first time that Meta has been accused of trying to hide its ignorance about the negative effects of Instagram on teenagers.

The negative psychological effects of Instagram on young viewers have drawn harsh criticism from various aspects of society.
The app is gradually tightening the restrictions placed on these users in an attempt to make the platform safer.
Many jurisdictions are cracking down on how appropriate the apps are for young users.

According to the document, Meta became aware of the problem when an Instagram employee pretended to be a 13-year-old girl and set up a fictitious account to conduct an internal investigation.
She found recommendations about eating disorders and graphic material while looking for diet advice.
Later, Meta staff members expressed concern about research showing that one in three girls felt bad about their bodies as a result of using Instagram.

Multiple times, Meta and Instagram have been accused of disregarding the mental health of teenage girls.
The Wall Street Journal reported in 2017 that META was aware of the harmful effects of Instagram on young people's mental health.
The report claimed that despite being fully aware of what was happening, Meta publicly decided to take a different stand on the matter.

Several studies have discovered a correlation between Instagram use and users' mental health.
According to a 2017 Flinders University study, Instagram influencers' workout hashtags made female users feel self-conscious about their bodies.
Similar findings were made in another study by the American Psychological Institute that linked Instagram use and depression.

Instagram is tightening restrictions on what users under 16 can post. Teen users of the platform now have a default setting that protects them from harmful content.
Additionally, the business has implemented parental controls, allowing parents to see what their kids are doing on Instagram.
The company claims that the age verification technology has improved.
