Thiruvananthapuram: In an unexpected move, Metroman E.Sreedharan announced his retirement from active politics on Thursday.

"Many people do not know, I am 90 years old now and I am in the advanced stage as far as my age is concerned," he told the journalists in his hometown of Malappuram. I don't mean I'm leaving politics when I say I'm quitting active politics. I was sad when I lost the polls, but now I am not sad because nothing can be done with just one legislator." He said that the BJP's state unit had a vote share of 16 to 17 percent, but that it had dropped now.

I've never been a politician; I'm a bureaucrat, and while I won't be engaged in politics, I can always help people in other ways. "I have three trusts in which I have work to do," Sreedharan stated.

He joined the BJP in February, just before the Kerala Assembly elections. Sreedharan, who fought from the Palakkad Assembly constituency, was hailed by a segment of the Kerala BJP as the party's Chief Ministerial candidate. In the April 6 Assembly elections, he was defeated by youthful Congress legislator Shafi Parambil by 3,859 votes.
