Due to increased inflow following rains in the Cauvery catchment areas water level in the mettur dam increases. The filling up of the dam has raised the hopes of farmers and fishermen in the Delta region. 

“The water level has reached 100 feet as against its full reservoir capacity of 120 feet at 12.05 pm,” said PWD officials. Currently, the inflow was at 8,111 cusecs and the discharge has been maintained at 500 cusecs for Delta irrigation, while the discharge through canals is at 250 cusecs at 8 am on Friday. 

Over the last few days owing to heavy rains brought by Cyclone Nivar and earlier by the monsoon the water discharge to Delta districts has been reduced drastically.  The dam now has storage of 64,582 mcft. The Mettur dam, stood above 100 feet for more than 300 days, had dropped to 99.640 feet on June 16, five days after opening on June 12 for kuruvai cultivation. Thereafter, the storage level crossed the 100 feet mark on September 25, then on October 13 and again on October 24. This is the fourth in the year which the dam crosses 100 feet.
