At a function organised by the Tinsukia district administration on Friday, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma distributed 22,674 cheques to waive microfinance loans taken out by women of the Tinsukia district at Janamukh Field Borguri under the Assam Microfinance Incentives and Relief Scheme, 2021 (AMFIRS).

Beneficiaries would receive a one-time incentive of up to Rs 25,000 or the outstanding sum, whichever is smaller, to encourage them to maintain good credit discipline for those who have been unable to repay the loan but have made regular payments to the banks, according to Sarma. While 5,000 recipients received their checks today, the other beneficiaries will get their checks from their respective blocks.

While presenting the cheques, the Chief Minister urged the recipients to use the financial incentive to strengthen their business enterprises, adding that the cash distribution procedure would be completed by May 10.

He grieved that, despite having enormous commercial potential, the people of Assam had not achieved self-sufficiency after 75 years. He urged everyone to adopt a work ethic and become workaholics so that Assam may become the most progressive state in the country in the next ten years. Sarma advised rural residents to engage in egg production, piggery, and other items native to this region in order to increase their income in small ways. Guardian Minister Atul Bora, Minister for Labour and Tea Tribes Welfare Department Sanjay Kishan, and district administration officials attended the meeting.
