Migraines can be debilitating and disrupt daily life. While they can strike without warning, some people experience warning signs or "prodromes" before an attack. These signals can occur hours or even days before the migraine, and 60% of people with migraines experience them. Common prodromes include constipation or diarrhea, mood changes, neck stiffness, and cravings for specific foods or drinks.

Some people also experience an "aura" before or during a migraine, which affects their vision and senses. About 20% of people with migraines experience an aura, which can cause symptoms like:

- Blind spots or flashing lights
- Hearing sounds or music
- Numbness or tingling in hands and feet

To manage migraines, try these tips:

- Consume caffeine wisely: For some, caffeine can alleviate headache symptoms, but be cautious not to overdo it and avoid consuming it before bedtime.
- Apply heat or cold: Placing a heating pad or ice pack on your head or neck may help relieve pain. Experiment to find what works best for you.
- Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day, keeping a water bottle with you at all times.
- Avoid overmedicating: Taking too much pain medication can be harmful. Limit your use of pain relievers to fewer than 10 days per month to avoid "rebound" headaches.
- Steer clear of migraine triggers: Avoid foods like aged cheese, alcohol, processed meats, chocolate, or artificial sweeteners, which can trigger migraines.

By recognizing your warning signs and taking proactive steps, you can reduce the frequency and severity of migraines and improve your quality of life.

Additional tips:

- Keep a headache diary to track your symptoms and identify patterns
- Maintain a consistent sleep schedule
- Engage in stress-reducing activities like meditation or yoga
- Consider consulting a healthcare professional for personalized guidance
