New Delhi: On June 10th, the Indian Navy reached a significant milestone with the launch of the Missile Cum Ammunition Barge, LSAM 13, from Yard 81. This barge marks the fifth achievement under the Missile Cum Ammunition Barge project, a collaborative effort between MSME Shipyard and SECON Engineering Projects Pvt Ltd (SEPPL) based in Visakhapatnam. Commodore Manish Vig, General Manager (QA) at ND(Mbi), presided over the launching ceremony, as per an official statement from the Ministry of Defence.

The genesis of this endeavor dates back to February 19, 2021, when the Ministry of Defence signed a contract with M/s SECON Engineering Projects Pvt Ltd for the construction of these barges. The LSAM 13, along with its counterparts, will play a pivotal role in augmenting the operational capabilities of the Indian Navy. They will facilitate the seamless transportation, embarkation, and disembarkation of essential articles and ammunition to IN ships, both at jetties and outer harbors.

Crafted indigenously, these barges adhere to the stringent Naval Rules and Regulations of the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS). The design phase saw rigorous model testing at the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL) in Visakhapatnam, ensuring their compliance with the highest standards of quality and safety.

These achievements underscore the commitment of the Indian government to the Make in India initiative. Each barge is a testament to indigenous expertise and innovation, contributing to the nation's self-reliance in defense production.

In a separate incident earlier this week, the Indian Navy Ship (INS) swiftly responded to a distress call from the fishing vessel INFAN DHAS, which had encountered engine failure. The technical team aboard the INS promptly rectified the issue, enabling the fishing vessel to resume its operations without delay, exemplifying the Indian Navy's dedication to maritime safety and assistance.
