Mizo regiment to guard borders with Bangladesh demands a MP from Mizoram

Rajya Sabha MP K Vanlalvena from Mizoram has put forth the need to establish the Mizo regiment in the Indian Army or a paramilitary force to guard the state's international borders with Bangladesh and Myanmar. The Mizo regiment will solve the local unemployment issues but also boost the national security said the lone MP from Mizoram. He has met the Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and ugred him to take initial steps to set up the regiment.

Mizos resistance against the British rule is well known. The MP said, the inborn spirit of the Mizo youths and strong desire to join security forces, can make theMizo regiment the best army regiment or paramilitary force in the country. A vast stretch of 404KMs and 318 KMs international border has been shared with Myanmar and Bangladesh respectively. At present, Myanmar area was guarded by Assam Rifles and the Border Security Force (BSF) mans guards the border with Bangladesh. They  not only safeguard the borders but also checks the smuggling of arms and drugs. Heroin is smuggled into Mizoram from Myanmar often.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, last year during CAA agitation had made a promise to NGOs from Mizoram that the Centre will raise a CRPF battalion comprising Mizo youths, said a Central Young Mizo Association (CYMA) leader. To benoted, on september 30, the BSF had seized 30 automatic rifles and 8000 cartridges near Indo-Bangladesh border indicating the need for high security vigilance.
