CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Chief Minster MK Stalin held a wqarm meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the national capital on Thursday.

Among the demands made by Tamil Nadu CM in front of PM Modi  include the need for a Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for the footwear manufacturing sector, the establishment of a Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) lab in the state, the supply of coal in adequate quantities as agreed, and the sharing of cess and surcharge with the states. During his discussion with the Prime Minister, Stalin handed over a paper outlining the state's different requests.

Stalin said, Tamil Nadu is a major player in the footwear sector on both a national and international scale, accounting for 26 percent of national manufacturing production and 45 percent of national exports. A PLI scheme for footwear production will boost existing players' productivity and make India the preferred destination for footwear exporters.

Stalin added that the PLI system will also help with import replacement for input products such ornaments, zippers, soles, buckles, and embellishments. Stalin encouraged the Central government to transfer the 1,507.23 acre surplus land associated with the Salem Steel Plant so that it could be used for a Defense Industrial Park.
