NEW DELHI: The Centre has taken a tough stand against corruption and forced 22 tax officials out of service. The Modi government forcibly retired 22 senior ao level officers from the CDIC. Many of these officials have been charged with corruption while others have been arrested by the CBI. This is the third time since June this year that the government has fired corrupt officials.

This has once again made it clear that its action against corruption and inefficiency will continue. According to sources, the Central Board of Direct Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has forcibly retired the officers using Fundamental Rule 56 (J) of CGST Zone Nagpur, Bhopal, Chennai, Bengaluru, Delhi, Jaipur, Kolkata, Meerut and Mumbai, and Customs. The zones include officials from Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Chandigarh.

The move comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort on August 15. Prime Minister Modi had said that there are many officials who have tarnished the tax administration, who may have misused their powers and harassed honest taxpayers. The government will not tolerate such behavior, so many such officers have been fired in the recent run. Prior to the CDIC move, the government had forcibly retired 27 IRS officers using Fundamental Rule 56 (J), including 12 from the CBDT.
