New Delhi: The Central Government has filed an application in the apex court seeking clarification on the issue of giving reservation to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in promotion. The Center says that about 1.3 lakh promotions are pending till January 2020. There is a lot of anger among government employees and officials due to stalled promotions.

The government has requested that it be allowed to promote temporarily as a large number of posts are lying vacant. The government has said that out of 78 departments, promotion work has stopped in 23 departments. The government says that on April 15 last year, due to the order to maintain the status quo, all promotions of reserved and general category have been completely banned. A few months ago, a review petition was filed in the apex court against the decision on reservation in promotion in government jobs.

The petition has asked the apex court to reconsider the decision that it is not a fundamental right to claim reservation in government jobs. Therefore, no court can order state governments to give reservation to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (SC-ST).
