New Delhi: PM Narendra Modi has announced to provide optical fiber network to more than 6 lakh villages on the occasion of 74th Independence Day of India. He has said, "Optical fiber network will be provided in all more than 6 lakh villages. We have set a target, optical fiber network will be completed in more than 6 lakh villages of the country within a thousand days."

Due to the spread of Corona infection in the country, the digital environment is increasing rapidly. Apart from the city, Internet and digital transactions are being given more preference in villages. PM Modi has said in a tweet, in the next 1000 days, Lakshadweep will also be connected to submarine optical fiber cable. The National Optical Fiber Network (NoFN) is now known as the BharatNet project.

It was launched in 2012. The project aims to provide affordable broadband services to citizens and institutions in rural and remote areas in partnership with states and private sectors. It is implemented by Bharat Broadband Network Limited (BBNL). BBNL is a special purpose vehicle under the Ministry of Telecommunications. This is an ambitious rural internet connectivity program of the Government of India.
