New Delhi/Varanasi: On Wednesday, the Election Commission rejected the nomination of dismissed Border Security Force (BSF) jawan Tej Bahadur Yadav as Samajwadi Party candidate from Varanasi Lok Sabha constituency, from where Prime Minister Narendra Modi is contesting.

Commenting on the matter, Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) president Arvind Kejriwal tweeted there would be very few anecdotes in the history when a soldier of the country is pushed to compete against the prime minister.

However, this is the first time in the history when the PM is so scared of the jawan that he ensures that his nomination gets rejected citing technical faults in spite of competing against him.

“Modi ji, aap toh bahut kamzor nikale. Desh ka jawan jeet gaya (Modi ji, you have proved yourself very weak. The soldier of the nation has won).”

On Tuesday, the district election officer had served notices to Tej Bahadur pointing "discrepancies" in the two nominations filed by him. He alleged the BJP was creating "roadblocks" in his nomination process to "prevent" him from contesting polls against the PM.

"I had filed my first nomination as an Independent candidate on April 24 and on SP party symbol on April 29. If there were any issues with the nominations, why wasn't I informed earlier. Despite lack of time, our legal team is furnishing all details to the RO (returning officer)," Tej Bahadur had said.

In the first set of papers filed on April 24, he had said that he was dismissed from the BSF. However, on April 29, he did not divulge this information. He was asked to submit a NOC (no-objection certificate) from the BSF, stating why he was dismissed.  After his nomination papers were rejected, he alleged that the BJP resorted to "dictatorial steps" to prevent him from contesting the elections.
