UNITED STATES: In a significant meeting held in New York, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Tesla CEO Elon Musk discussed investment prospects in India's electric vehicle and commercial space sectors.

During their dialogue, Elon Musk expressed his interest in exploring investment opportunities in India, indicating a potential investment in the near future. The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed that Prime Minister Modi invited Musk to consider investments in electric mobility and the rapidly expanding commercial space sector within India.

Tesla's Previous Hurdles in India: In the past, talks between Tesla and the Indian government faced obstacles when officials declined to reduce import duties on electric cars without a commitment from Tesla to establish manufacturing facilities in India. Tesla, aiming to assess demand in the Indian market, had initially requested permission to sell and service vehicles before committing to a production facility.

Tesla's Manufacturing Expansion Plans: Recently, there have been reports suggesting a more flexible negotiating stance from Tesla as the company explores options for expanding its manufacturing operations. Presently, Tesla has manufacturing facilities in Germany and China. In January, there were indications of a potential deal between Tesla and Indonesia for a new production facility with a capacity of 1 million units. South Korea was also mentioned as a prospective location for Tesla's expansion, following a meeting between Elon Musk and President Yoon Seok-Yeol in April 2023.

India's Significance for Tesla's Global Sales Target: Elon Musk has set an ambitious goal of achieving 20 million electric vehicle sales worldwide by 2030. To reach this target, Tesla will need to establish additional manufacturing capacity and tap into demand in some of the largest global markets, including India. An individual familiar with Tesla's India operations stated, "India is a significant piece in Tesla's strategy to achieve its global sales goal," emphasizing the country's importance.

The meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Tesla CEO Elon Musk in New York highlighted the potential for investments in India's electric vehicle and commercial space sectors. Tesla's interest in exploring opportunities in India indicates a positive outlook for future collaborations and growth. With the Indian market's vast potential, Tesla's entry into the country could pave the way for accelerated development and adoption of electric mobility and commercial space technologies.
