NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi's just concluded speeches in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha emphasized his government's unwavering commitment to its agenda despite recent electoral setbacks. Addressing the Motion of Thanks on the President’s Address, Modi reaffirmed his focus on stability and continuity in policies.
In light of the reduced popular mandate for the Modi government in the recent Lok Sabha elections, many expected a shift in priorities, particularly towards increased welfare spending. However, Modi's speeches indicated a steadfast approach. He stressed that his government would continue to focus on development while maintaining fiscal discipline.
Modi emphasized the theme of a "Viksit Bharat" (Developed India), aiming to transform the nation by 2047. He highlighted the optimism generated by his government's policies over the past decade, contrasting it with the despair and corruption that marked the pre-2014 era. He noted that India had advanced from the 10th to the 5th largest economy globally, with aspirations to become the 3rd largest.
In his speeches, Modi listed significant achievements, including a successful 5G rollout, record coal production, and transformative banking policies. He also emphasized the government’s efforts in job creation, particularly in the private sector, and the strides made in digital payments, making India a global leader.
Modi underscored his government's commitment to various social and economic goals: providing clean drinking water to every household, building homes for the poor, strengthening the armed forces, promoting renewable energy, and boosting infrastructure development. He also highlighted the Digital India movement and India's emergence as a major mobile manufacturer and exporter.
The Prime Minister assured continuity in infrastructure development, promising to build three crore more houses for the poor. He stressed that the third term of his government would see intensified efforts and greater results in all areas.
Modi also elaborated on his government’s social agenda, detailing increased procurement of wheat and paddy at minimum support prices, credit schemes for street vendors and artisans, and welfare measures for nomadic communities and transgender individuals. He highlighted initiatives focused on women's welfare and development, such as the Lakhpati Didis and Drone Didis schemes.
While Modi's speeches indicated a renewed focus on welfare programs, they also underscored that these efforts would not come at the expense of development and fiscal responsibility. The underlying message was clear: the Modi government remains committed to its previous agendas and will double down on them with even greater vigor.
