Afghanistan's celebrated allrounder, Mohammad Nabi, has announced his intention to retire from One Day Internationals (ODIs) after the 2025 Champions Trophy. Nabi shared his plans after the recent ODI series win against Bangladesh in the UAE, where he claimed the Player-of-the-Series award in Afghanistan's 2-1 victory.
Reflecting on his decision, Nabi said, "In my mind, from the last World Cup, I was retired, but then we qualified for the Champions Trophy, and I felt if I could play that, it would be great." Reports suggest that he has already informed the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) of his decision and will continue to represent Afghanistan in T20 Internationals.
With 167 ODI appearances, Nabi holds the record for being Afghanistan's most-capped ODI player and is currently ranked as the world's No. 1 ODI allrounder. He has been a key figure since Afghanistan's first-ever ODI against Scotland in 2009. With 3,600 runs, he ranks as Afghanistan's second-highest run-scorer in ODIs, having notched up 17 half-centuries and two centuries. As an offspinner, he has taken 172 wickets, making him the second-highest wicket-taker for Afghanistan in ODIs.
The upcoming 2025 Champions Trophy will mark Afghanistan’s first appearance in the prestigious tournament, a feat they achieved by finishing sixth at the 2023 ODI World Cup in India. The Champions Trophy will feature the top seven teams from the latest World Cup, along with host nation Pakistan.
Throughout his career, Nabi has been instrumental in Afghanistan's remarkable rise in international cricket, contributing to their achievements across ODIs, T20Is, and Test cricket. He captained Afghanistan during their first 50-over World Cup appearance in 2015 and later played in both the 2019 and 2023 editions. Nabi retired from Test cricket in 2019 but continues to play a pivotal role in Afghanistan's T20 squad.
