He was born in Kota Sultan Singh village of Amritsar district. Rafi, who gave voice to 28000 songs in different languages. He has recorded a song shortly before his death. Rafi's elder brother used to run a saloon. Mohammad Rafi had no interest in studies. In such a situation, his father sent him along with his elder brother to learn to work in the saloon.

He used to sing songs with the fakir of his village. Rafi Sahab liked the voice of that fakir so much that he used to imitate his voice. One day fakir also heard his song. Fakir was very happy to see Rafi's feelings towards the song and blessed Rafi that the son would live for a day. Sufi Fakir became the inspiration of his singing and he became Ustad Mohammad Rafi from Mohammad Rafi.

A few hours before his death, he had come after recording the song 'Shaam phir kyun udas hai dost, tu kahin aapko hai dost' from the film 'Aas Paas'. He had stopped singing at the behest of the clerics. Mohammed Rafi was a very lively and jovial personality. But such information comes to know about them which shocks.  

Rafi once left singing for some time due to the advice of Maulana. Maulana had said that singing and dancing after Hajj is not allowed in the religion. After this he quit singing. But after Naushad sahab and Rafi's son's advice he started singing. singing. Then he changed his mind and started singing again. After this, for 8 consecutive years, he decorated one-to-one brilliant songs with his voice. He died on 31st July 1980 but his melodious voice still stops music lovers in their tracks.
