The Malayalam actor Mohanlal has resigned from his position as the head of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA). This move comes in the wake of troubling revelations by the Justice K Hema Committee, which reported widespread harassment and abuse of female professionals in the Malayalam film industry.

The resignation of Mohanlal, a key figure in the industry, has led to the dissolution of AMMA. This decision follows the dramatic findings of the Hema Committee, which exposed serious issues of misconduct within the industry.

Earlier this week, the Malayalam cinema world faced a storm of controversy, with two high-profile resignations linked to these allegations. Director Ranjith, who had been under scrutiny following accusations from a Bengali actress, stepped down from his role as chairman of a state-run film academy. The allegations against Ranjith, which had been simmering for years, gained renewed attention following the release of the Hema Committee’s report.

Actor Siddique also resigned from his role as the general secretary of AMMA. His resignation came amid growing demands from within the industry for his removal, following allegations of sexual assault made against him on August 24.

The Hema Committee, established by the Kerala government after a 2017 actress assault case, has brought to light several instances of harassment and exploitation in the Malayalam film industry. The report has sparked a significant call for accountability and reform within the industry.
