BUCHAREST:  The visiting president of Moldova, Maia Sandu, declared that to ensure domestic energy security, her nation intended to purchase gas from Romania as soon as feasible.

In a joint press release with her Romanian counterpart Klaus Iohannis, she said, "The situation compels us to act with maximum urgency and look for other ways to keep the stability of the country and smoothly make it through the winter." "Moldova urgently needs answers for energy security! The purchase of gas from Romania is something we want to do as quickly as possible "Sandu emphasised, noting that the current conflict between Russia and Ukraine has the greatest impact on her country.

"I am confident that the relationship between Moldova and Romania will assist us in overcoming the challenges," she said. The Premier of Moldova also stated that the nation is attempting to cut energy use, particularly that of natural gas, and that it is searching for ways to substitute black oil, wood, or coal for gas during this winter.

Iohannis stated that Romania will make every effort to assist Moldova in ensuring energy security. The two heads of state  had agreed to take prompt action to connect their nations' electrical networks, he said.

The Iasi-Ungheni-Chisinau gas pipeline's "extremely important significance and potential as an essential part in the energy security architecture of the Republic of Moldova" was another topic covered by the two presidents, Iohannis said.

The 150-km pipeline was finished in late 2021 to guarantee Moldova's energy diversification, a nation wholly reliant on Russian energy. It links the gas distribution systems of the two nations and gives Moldova access to the European energy market. Local media, however, claimed that since its completion, the gas pipeline has not been properly utilised.
