Mollywood Film Industry in Turmoil: Justice Hema Committee Report Unveils More Shocking Details

Kochi: The Malayalam film industry is grappling with intense scrutiny following the release of the Justice Hema Committee Report, which reveals disturbing issues of sexual abuse, exploitation, and unsafe working conditions. The report, published on August 19, 2024, follows a prolonged investigation initiated by the Kerala government in 2017 after a high-profile incident involving the kidnapping and assault of a prominent actress.

The 235-page report, although redacted to protect identities, confirms the existence of the "casting couch" phenomenon in the industry. It also highlights severe deficiencies in basic facilities for women on film sets, particularly in outdoor locations.

Key Figures and Allegations
The report has led to significant developments, including legal actions against notable figures in the industry. Bengali actress Sreelekha Mitra has accused filmmaker Ranjith of inappropriate conduct during the making of the 2009 film Paleri Manikyam: Oru Pathirakolapathakathinte Katha. Following her allegations, Ranjith resigned from his position as chairman of the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy, and a non-bailable case has been filed against him.

Additionally, around 17 cases have been registered against several industry figures, including actors Jayasurya and Mukesh, and producer Maniyanpilla Raju. Actor Minu Muneer has also accused several industry personalities of abuse.

The Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA) dissolved on August 27, 2024, after the resignation of its president Mohanlal and 17 other members, including Siddique and Edavela Babu, who faced accusations of sexual misconduct. The Women in Cinema Collective (WCC), which advocated for the investigation, expressed satisfaction with the report’s release.

Nivin Pauly's Involvement
Recent allegations have surfaced against actor and producer Nivin Pauly, who has been accused of rape by a 40-year-old woman. The complaint alleges that Pauly sexually assaulted her over a year ago in Dubai. Pauly has denied the charges and vowed to prove his innocence, describing the allegations as "entirely untrue" and suggesting a possible conspiracy.

Background of the Hema Committee Report
The Justice Hema Committee was formed following a highly publicized incident where a Malayalam actress was kidnapped and sexually assaulted. Actor Dileep was implicated in the attack and charged with conspiracy. The Women in Cinema Collective (WCC) then petitioned the Kerala government to address the systemic issues within the industry.

The committee, led by retired Justice K. Hema, former actor Sharada, and retired IAS officer K.B. Valsala Kumari, submitted its findings in December 2019. The report was delayed in its release due to its sensitive content but was eventually made public after legal battles led by RTI activists.

Findings and Reactions
The report details widespread sexual exploitation and discrimination, noting that women often face coercion and lack basic amenities on set. It also points to a male-dominated industry that fosters a culture of intimidation and harassment. The report has prompted calls for similar investigations in other regional film industries.

In response to the report, senior actors Mohanlal and Mammootty have called for justice and reform. The National Commission for Women (NCW) and the Kerala High Court have requested the full report for further review.
