Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has unveiled a new initiative aimed at preserving the sanctity of the Narmada River by proposing a ban on liquor and meat shops in religious towns throughout the state.

In a statement made on Saturday, CM Yadav outlined the government's efforts to protect the revered Maa Narmada. "We are working with all state departments to ensure the holiness and blessings of Maa Narmada are upheld. We plan to impose a ban on meat and liquor shops in religious towns. This process is ongoing, and we will review the results in November," he said.

The Congress party has expressed support for the initiative, calling it a positive and sacred step. Congress leader Jitu Patwari praised the decision and suggested that CM Yadav, who is from Ujjain, should start by enforcing the ban there. "Ujjain, being the most sacred town in the state, should lead by example. The Congress party recently passed a resolution requesting the CM to implement this ban in Ujjain," Patwari noted.

On Friday, CM Yadav convened a meeting with cabinet ministers to discuss measures for cleaning and preserving the Narmada River. He proposed using satellite and drone technology to monitor environmental impacts and ensure that meat and liquor consumption is restricted in the river's vicinity and other sacred areas.

"Amarkantak, the source of Maa Narmada, should be managed by establishing an 'Amarkantak Development Authority' focused on environmental protection. New developments should be planned away from the river’s source, and efforts must be made to prevent sewage from entering the river. We will set clear timelines for these tasks," CM Yadav said.

The Chief Minister also called for the use of advanced technologies for waste management and emphasized banning machine-based mining in the river. "Maa Narmada is a vital part of our cultural heritage and must be protected from environmental harm caused by modern consumer practices," he added.

The government is committed to the integrated development of the Narmada, engaging various departments, voluntary organizations, spiritual groups, and the public. Suggestions for conservation are welcomed, and there will be further discussions with the Central Government and the Archaeological Survey of India regarding upgrades to the Mamleshwar Temple at Omkareshwar.

CM Yadav highlighted the importance of creating Parikrama paths for devotees and developing infrastructure along these routes. He encouraged local youth and self-help groups to establish homestays and information centers to support visitors undertaking the Parikrama. Additionally, he called for the planting of Sal and Teak trees and cultivation of herbs to promote biodiversity and natural farming practices within a five-kilometer radius of the river.

CM Yadav also stressed the importance of protecting geologically significant areas within the Narmada region to ensure its long-term conservation.
