Mumbai: A court in Mumbai has approved the bail of Vikas Khanchandani, CEO of Republic TV. Khanchandani was detained by the Mumbai Police on Sunday in the alleged Television Rating Point (TRP) scam case. He was in police custody till 15 December. Khanchandani has been granted bail on a bond of Rs 50,000.
The fake TRP scam was revealed in October when rating agency Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) filed a complaint through Hansa Research Group. It was alleged that some TV channels are manipulating the TRP figures. Hansa is one of the BARC companies that conduct research on the number of channels watched and viewers at home. TRP records and studies audience data in select households, which is important to attract advertisers. According to the police, some of these houses were being paid to watch Republic TV and some other channels.
In the TRP scam, including Vikas Khanchandani, a total of 13 have been arrested so far. On October 6, a case was registered by the Mumbai Police's Crime Branch on the complaint of Hansa Research officer Nitin Devkar.
