NEW DELHI: How people are aware of traffic rules in our country can be judged from the fact that the Mumbai Traffic Police has earned Rs 139 crore in 2018 by imposing fines. This was reported by news agency IANS in a tweet. This is why 1.5 million people die in road accidents every year in their country. But, the Government is also gearing up to curb this.
The Motor Vehicle Amendment Act, 2019 has been passed in this Monsoon Session of Parliament. The introduction of this law is meant to improve the traffic system and curb accidents. At the moment, only a few provisions of this law have been implemented. These include the use of mobile phones while driving, drunken driving, crossing red lights, over-taking and high-speed driving, and poor road conditions.
The government has made it clear that the penalty provisions will be implemented now. Gradually other provisions will also be strictly enforced. Now, driving without a helmet will pay a fine of Rs. 10,000 for drunken driving, 1000 thousand for driving without a helmet, 5000 for driving without a seat belt, Rs 5,000 for talking on the phone at the time of driving. In addition, the guardian or the owner of the vehicle will be held guilty if caught while driving a minor. A fine of Rs 25,000 can be accompanied by a sentence of 3 years.
