MUMBAI: Train services on the Mumbai-Pune route were affected for about eight hours early Friday when rocks fell on a railway track in the Lonavala-Karjat ghat segment, officials said, however traffic was eventually restored.

The incident occurred about 12.50 a.m. on the Up (Mumbai-bound) line between Nagnath and Palasdhari in the ghat area, and services were restored by 8.15 a.m., they said.

The Central Railway (CR) claimed on Friday that after rocks fell on a track in Bhor ghat, numerous outstation trains were held for 30 minutes to an hour, disrupting services between Mumbai and Pune. "The incident occurred on the Mumbai-bound line," said Shivaji Sutar, the CR's principal public relations officer. The Lonavala-Karjat ghat portion includes three railway lines - Down, Mid, and Up.

"Traffic on the affected Up line was restored around 8.15 a.m., following around eight hours of efforts." Mail express trains on the Midline were diverted during the repair work."

He further stated that an on-duty patrolman, Motiram Lobhi, found the boulders on the track and took the appropriate precautions to avoid any untoward incidence.

"He acted quickly and used a red signal to stop one banker (locomotive) that was in a sector. Following that, he called his superiors and notified them of the occurrence."

The boulders that had fallen ranged in size from one to two metres. Mr. Sutar stated that a boulder train was roped in for the rehabilitation job.
