Haryana: India's President Droupadi Murmu addressed the 19th convocation of the ICAR-NDRI - Indian Council of Agricultural Research - National Dairy Research Institute  at Karnal, Haryana today, April 24,

President received a hearty welcome from the Governor of Haryana Bandaru Dattatraya and Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar received President Droupadi Murmu on her arrival at Karnal.

Addressing the meeting, the President said that the dairy industry plays a major role in ensuring the food and nutritional security of India. The dairy sector also contributes about 5% to the country's Forss Domestic Product and provides livelihood to about 8.00 crore families in India. Therefore, institutions like National Dairy Research Institute of India have a key role to play in the inclusive development of the country.

President  Murmu said that cows and other livestock have been an integral part of Indian society and traditions. She said,  milk and milk products have always been an integral part of Indian food and culture. Needless to say, India is the largest milk-producing country in the world.

The President was happy to note that the National Dairy Research Institute of India has developed technology to produce clones of high milk-yielding cows and buffaloes. She said that it would increase the milk production capacity of the animals and boost the income of farmers. At the same time, we are facing the challenges of increasing demand for milk products. Apart from this, the dairy sector is also facing challenges in the availability of good quality fodder, change in weather because of the climate change and diseases in livestock.

Our challenge is to make milk production and dairy farming sustainable. We all have a responsibility to advance the dairy business by implementing environmentally and climatically responsible technologies, she said.

She was pleased to learn that NDRI is supporting a number of technologies to lower greenhouse gas emissions from dairy farms.  NDRI is  also highlighting clean energy sources including the production of biogas.

The  President said, women are actively involved in the management of India's dairy business. This industry has a significant potential to help women become self-sufficient. More possibilities for education, training, and skill development are thus required for them. To start businesses in the dairy industry, women should also have access to simple financing and the market.

She is also scheduled to visit Hisar to attend the 25th convocation of the Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University.
