Murmu to attend Gauhati HC's Diamond Jubilee celebrations on April 7

Guwahati: Droupadi Murmu, the President of India, will be taking part the Jubilee celebrations of Gauhati High Court on April 7 during her 2-day visit to Assam, source said. Notably, the Gauhati High Court will be completing its Diamond Jubilee (75th year) of its existence on April 5.


The Chief Justice of India, Justice Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud, will attend the event in addition to the President.
"To commemorate the occasion, a meeting has been convened on April 5 that will be attended by Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju, Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, Chief Justice of Gauhati HC Sandeep Mehta, and the Judges of the High Court," said Arup Jyoti Baishya, Joint Registrar (Judicial) of Gauhati HC.

"On April 5, a commemorative stamp, the Assamese translation of the book "Gauhati High Court: History & Heritage," a special issue of the journal ATMA, and a commemorative postal stamp will be made available. Sarbananda Sonowal, the union minister for ports, shipping, and waterways as well as AYUSH, would release six books on customary laws belonging to various tribes on April 6. These tribes include the Bodos of Assam and the Rabha, Tiwa, and Zeme-Naga "Arup Jyoti Baishya stated.

On April 14, a ceremony where Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be present, the Platinum Jubilee celebrations will come to a close.

The Gauhati High Court "has decided to felicitate past Judges, senior Advocates who have completed 50 years of practise in addition to some former members of the Registry, Judicial Officers, and the Advocates' Clerk on the occasion of the Platinum Jubilee celebration," Baishya added.

The Gauhati High Court was first focused on the seven North Eastern states of Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram, and Arunachal Pradesh when it was first established on April 5th, 1948. However, currently the Gauhati High Court has jurisdiction over the remaining four North Eastern states as a result of the creation of separate High Courts for the states of Manipur, Meghalaya, and Tripura.

Baishya continued, "The Gauhati High Court is one of the institutions that connect the four North Eastern states and is credited with delivering several landmark rulings on several matters of public concern, particularly those dealing with the rights of the indigenous population.

Other events, including a quiz competition, a legal lecture to be given by the former Chief Justice of India, Justice U. U. Lalit, and a cultural programme showcasing the rich history of the North East, have also been planned as part of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations.
