KOLKATA: India President Droupadi Murmu arrived in Kolkata on Monday, March 27, for a two-day visit to West Bengal. As per an official statement released on Sunday, the President is all set to start her visit by paying homage to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose at the Netaji Bhawan in Kolkata.
On reaching the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport at Kolkatta, She received a guard of honour, and from there she reached the helipad at the Race Course ground in Central Kolkata by an Indian Air Force helicopter.
The President was welcomed by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Governor C.V. Ananda Bose at the Race Course grounds. The governor and the state's minister of parliamentary affairs and agriculture, Sovandeb Chattopadhyay, joined her as she left for the Netaji Research Bureau at Netaji Bhawan on Elgin Road in South Kolkata.
The President has appointments to visit the Netaji Research Bureau and Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore's ancestral home in north Kolkata, Jorasanko.
The President will also be present at a citizen's convention that the state government is hosting at the Netaji Indoor Stadium in the heart of Kolkata. On the occasion of her first trip to the state since taking office last year, the chief minister would congratulate President Murmu.
The President will attend Visva Bharati University's annual convocation on Tuesday in the Birbhum district of West Bengal. She will only return to New Delhi on Tuesday night.
Murmu's visit to West Bengal is significant in view of the ongoing political developments in the state. The ruling Trinamool Congress is encountering a stiff challenge from the BJP in the upcoming assembly elections. President's visit to the state is expected to strengthen the morale of the BJP, which has been aggressively campaigning to wrest power from the Trinamool Congress.
