Bangalore: Angry over the Karnataka High Court verdict on the hijab row, Muslim community leaders have called for a 'Karnataka bandh' today. Muslim leaders have announced a voluntary bandh. The entire state trade body has also been instructed to join today's bandh. Muslim leader Sagir Ahmed has announced that he will hold a meeting with clerics of the Muslim community on Thursday. He said that no coercion will be made by anyone for the bandh.
It may be recalled that the High Court had on Tuesday dismissed all the petitions filed by Muslim girl students seeking to allow them to wear hijab in educational institutions. The court ruled that wearing hijab by Muslim women is not part of the religious practice mandated under Islam and the determination of school uniforms is just a reasonable restriction, which students cannot object to. The court had also said that the state government has the power to issue an order in this regard.
Leaders of the Muslim community had gathered to discuss the hijab on Tuesday. The meeting was held at the residence of Amir-e-Shariat. The meeting was attended by Salim Ahmed, Zameer Ahmad Khan, UT Khader, NA Harris, Nazir Ahmed, Rehman Khan, Khanij Fatima and others. After the high court's decision, the clerics have objected to the statement made by the students.
