Srinagar: The Muttahida Majlis-e-Ulama (MMU) has expressed concern over Muslim students singing mahatma Gandhi's favourite bhajans and performing Surya namaskar for physical fitness in Kashmiri schools. The MMU has said that the activities being implemented through schools and educational institutions should be stopped in the valley to further the Hindutva agenda. MMU is an organization with about 30 religious, social and educational organizations.

The Muslim organization has said in a statement that, 'Muslim students in schools and other educational institutions are being asked to sing Hindu religious songs and perform Surya Namaskar. This is an unfortunate attempt to undermine the Muslim identity of Kashmir. We have held a meeting at Jama Masjid in Srinagar regarding this matter.' It said that these orders hurt the religious sentiments of Muslims and create resentment among them. The MMU said a resolution was unanimously passed during the meeting and expressed serious concern over the dilution of the Muslim identity of the 'Valley of Saints.' It has been decided during the meeting that such activities should be stopped at the earliest.

Muslim organisations object to singing mahatma Gandhi's bhajan:

Recently, a video went viral on social media, in which children of a government school were seen singing Mahatma Gandhi's favourite bhajan 'Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram.' Following this, Muslim organisations requested parents that if their children are forced to take part in un-Islamic activities in government schools, they should get their children expelled from these schools and admit them to private schools.
