Kohima: Nagaland celebrated Christmas in a different way this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. For the first time in Christian majority State, many churches holding live online Christmas services due to the pandemic. The midnight services on Thursday welcoming the birth of Jesus were limited to lesser congregations in Churches following the corona protocols in the state.

Many Churches have cancelled the main celebrations with masses in Church premises in Kohima but they conducted live online Christmas services. Some churches hold the special mass in the Churches but with a limited gathering of believers in phases. Houses, commercial buildings, churches and streets have been lit with decorative lights in the State for Christmas.

Meanwhile, For the first in another north eartern sate Mizoram, Christmas was celebrated in low-key manner on Friday as the Covid-19 protocols were in place across the state. Traditionally, church service, carols, congregational gatherings called “Zaikhawm” in local parlance (singing Christmas songs and hymns in-group) and community feast form an integral part of Christmas celebration in the Christian dominated Mizoram. This year the Mizoram government has banned all such practices to prevent further spread of coronavirus.
