Field Marshal KM Cariappa had also been the BOSS of former Army Chief and President General Ayub Khan before Partition. There is a context in Cariappa's life that made him the greatest soldier. The matter is about the Indo-Pak war of 1965. He retired and was living in his hometown of Karnataka. His son Casey Nanda Cariappa was a flight lieutenant in the Indian Air Force at that time. During the war, his plane entered the Pakistan border, which was dropped by Pak soldiers. Nanda jumped from the plane and saved his life, but he climbed up the arms of the Pak soldiers.

There was Ayub Khan, the President of Pakistan at that time, who had worked in the Indian Army under KM Cariappa. As soon as he came to know that Nanda was caught, he immediately called KM Cariappa and told that he is releasing his son. On this, Cariappa abandoned the son's fascination and said that he is not only my son but of India as well. If you release him, don't even give him any facilities. He should be treated like a common prisoner of war. You (Ayub Khan) are requested to release all the prisoners of war or none. However, Nanda was released by Pakistan when the war ended.
