January 16 is earmarked as National Startup Day every year in India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had in 2021 declared that January 16 would be observed as National Startup Day to celebrate the Indian startup ecosystem.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared the official adoption of this day, referring to startups as the foundation of the "new India." Several events are being held this year as part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations at more than 75 locations across the nation with the goal of fostering an entrepreneurial and innovative spirit by involving the startup community.

These include workshops specifically targeted at women entrepreneurs, workshops for incubator training, mentorship workshops, stakeholder round tables, workshops for capacity building, company pitching sessions, and more.
2023's National Startup Day Theme: The Startup India Innovation Week will begin on January 10 and is organised by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT).

On January 16, this sequence of activities will come to an end. The first day of Startup India Innovation Week featured events, including a webinar on "Founders of Today, Leaders of Tomorrow," despite the lack of a set theme for the day.
2023's National Startup Day Historical point of view: The adoption of National Startup Day for January 16 was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 15, 2022. India observed its inaugural National Startup Day in the same year. Through video conferencing, PM Modi spoke with aspiring business owners and praised the expansion of startups in recent years.

The National Startup Awards 2022 winners will be honoured in an event organised by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade. The award ceremony, which Startup India has designated as its flagship programme, aims to honour and celebrate the excellence displayed by businesses and ecosystem supporters.
