The National Water Awards encourage the good work and efforts put forth by several people and organisations as part of the ongoing national endeavour to realise the government's vision of a "Jal Samridh Bharat" or "Water Prosperous India." It aims to raise people's awareness of the value of water and inspire them to adopt best water use practises. The event offers an opportunity for all individuals and groups to establish a solid alliance and increase public involvement in water resource conservation and management operations.

The Ministry of Jal Shakti launched a comprehensive campaign to raise public awareness of water management and conservation under the direction of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. It was deemed important to establish an integrated National Water Award in order to motivate different stakeholders to take a comprehensive approach to managing the nation's water resources. So, DoWR, RD, and GR introduced the first National Water Awards in 2018. The 2019 and 2020 editions of the National Water Awards were the second and third. The CoVID outbreak prevented the prizes from being presented in 2021.

The 4th National Water Awards in 2022 were introduced on the Rashtriya Puraskar Portal of the Ministry of Home Affairs on July 30, 2022. The deadline for submissions was October 31, 2022, and 868 applications in total were submitted. The applications underwent examination and assessment. The Central Water Commission and Central Ground Water Board verified the shortlisted applications on the ground, and 41 winners—including joint winners in all 11 categories—were then chosen to receive rewards.
