Nationwide bank strike: Bank workers hold protest in Varanasi

New Delhi: In the wake of nationwide bank strike commenced on Wednesday in which over a million employees of nearly 21 public sector bank workers staged protest in Varanasi demanding an immediate wage revision.

United Forum of Banking Unions (UFBU), an umbrella body of nine bank unions has called for a 2-day nationwide bank strike against wage hike proposed by the Indian Banks' Association (IBA) and now who banks with these 21 public sector banks may face a harrowing time.

Here is banking services which would affected -

1. Withdrawal and cash deposit in the branches of public sector banks are expected to be affected, impacting 75 percent of total business in the country.

2. Most of the banks, including State Bank of India (SBI), Punjab National Bank (PNB) and Bank of Baroda (BoB), have already informed their customers that functioning of branches and offices will be affected due to the 2-days nationwide strike.

3. The functioning of private banks like ICICI, HDFC, Axis and Kotak Mahindra is likely to be normal apart from for delays in cheque clearance.

4. As  News 18 reported,  according to National Organisation of Bank Worker's (NOBW) vice president Ashwini Rana, 10 lakh bank employees and officers of the 21 public sector banks, old generation private banks and foreign banks will take part in the two-day protest.

The bank strike came after a two per cent salary hike demand failed to convince the bank unions. Several rounds of talks between banks and the unions of their employees did not make any development and now ATMs services may also hit.
