CHHATTISGARH: Two policemen were killed after Naxalites fired at them in Chhattisgarh's Rajnandgaon district bordering Maharashtra on February 20, police said.
After the incident, the Maharashtra Police along with their team in Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh launched a joint operation to check the movement of Naxalites in the border areas of the 3 states, they said.
The incident took place between 7 am and 8 am under Bortalav police station are in Rajnandgaon district sorrounding Maharashtra, when the two personnel were going on a motorcycle, Rajnandgaon Superintendent of Police said.
As per initial reports, district force chief constable Rajesh Singh Rajput and constable Anil Kumar Samrat of the Chhattisgarh Armed Force were going towards Bortalav police camp to the Maharashtra border without any firearms, he added.
They were fired upon by a group of armed Naxalites. The official stated that one of the personnel passed away immediately and the other perished from injuries while being transported to a hospital.
In addition to setting their motorcycle on fire, the Naxalites fled from the area, which is 180 kilometres from Raipur, the state capital. He stated that there is a search effort going on in the area. Sandeep Patil, Deputy Inspector General, Gadchiroli (Maharashtra), said that following the incident, police assigned to the Chhattisgath border have been advised to adhere to standard operating procedures (SOPs) during surveillance at check points in the Naxal-affected district.
