The BJP-led NDA government is set to implement the 'one nation, one election' policy during its current term, according to sources. They expressed confidence that this reform will gain broad support across political parties. As the NDA government, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marks its 100th day in office for its third term, sources indicate that the alliance's unity will persist throughout the remainder of its term.

"Definitely, it will be implemented in this tenure itself. It will be a reality," one source said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

In his Independence Day speech last month, Prime Minister Modi strongly advocated for 'one nation, one election,' arguing that frequent elections hinder the country's progress.

"The nation has to come forward for 'one nation, one election'," Modi had stated during his address from the Red Fort.

He urged political parties to work together to advance the nation and ensure that national resources are used for the benefit of all citizens. Modi emphasized the need for collective effort to achieve the goal of 'one nation, one election.'

The 'one nation, one election' initiative is a major promise from the BJP's Lok Sabha election manifesto.

In March, a high-level committee led by former President Ram Nath Kovind recommended holding simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies as an initial step, with synchronized local body elections to follow within 100 days.

Additionally, the Law Commission is expected to recommend simultaneous elections for all three tiers of government—Lok Sabha, state assemblies, and local bodies like municipalities and panchayats—beginning in 2029. It may also suggest provisions for a unity government in cases of a hung house or no-confidence motions.

The Kovind panel has not specified a timeline for implementing simultaneous elections but proposed the formation of an 'Implementation Group' to oversee the execution of its recommendations. The panel has suggested up to 18 constitutional amendments, most of which will not require ratification by state assemblies but will need approval from Parliament.
