Playing the lead role in Alia Bhatt's movie. Shantanu Maheshwari is playing the role of Gangubai's husband and Ajay Devgan Karim Lala. This movie is said to be based on a real life story. The movie is also making headlines for some of its scenes, some of which are said to be related to former PM Jawaharlal Nehru.

Story of Ganga becoming Gangubai Kathiawadi: This movie is based on Hussain Zaidi's book Mafia Queens of Mumbai. Gangubai's real name was Ganga Harjivandas. When Ganga Harjivandas of Gujarat became Gangubai, neither did she know nor did the world get to know about it. Born in an affluent family, Ganga's dream was to grow up to become a famous actress. The parents brought up the daughter with great love. But during the college days, Ganga fell in love. The one he fell in love with at the age of 16 was wrong. This proved to be the biggest mistake of Ganga's life. Ganga fell in love with her father's accountant, Ramnik Lal. The family members were against it. Ganga also wanted to become an actress. So she fled to Mumbai with Ramnik. Ganga and Ramnik got married. But Ganga was still gazing at the glare of Mumbai when her husband Ramnik Lal had sold her to a brothel in Kamathipura for just Rs 500.

S Hussain Zaidi in his book 'Mafia Queens of Mumbai' mentions that Gangubai was raped by a member of the gang of mafia don Karim Lala. After which Gangubai fought for herself and met Karim Lala. Gangubai ties a rakhi to Karim Lala and accepts him as her brother. After which Ganga's life changed and from here the story of Ganga becoming 'Gangubai Kathiawadi' had started. Ganga Harjivandas started residing in Kathiwad of Gujarat. That's why people started calling him Gangubai Kathiawadi. She had become the owner of Mumbai's most famous brothel. Where it is being told that Gangubai used to keep only the girl in the kotha, whichever girl she wished. It has also been said in Hussain Zaidi's book that Gangubai's influence was not only up to the underworld and gangsters, but big politicians also started getting influenced by him.
