New Delhi:- Netflix has announced that it will introduce account and password sharing restrictions for its Indian user base starting July 20. The streaming service, which has long considered account and password sharing a potential revenue loss, made a similar move in its home U.S. market in early 2023, before expanding regulation to more than 100 countries in May.

Users in India with Netflix accounts in different households will first receive an email with instructions on how to use their accounts.

The announcement of the new restrictions was made through Netflix in the early hours of Thursday, July 20, and particularly affected the service's India operations. According to the update, Netflix will first send an email to users who use the same Netflix account outside of a single household informing them that the single account is only intended for use within a single household.

Users outside the primary member's household will be asked to transfer their profile to the new account and subscription.

Netflix is relatively free in India, allowing users to share one Netflix account among multiple households and users. This can help split the subscription fee between groups that do not belong to the same household, such as groups of friends or relatives. These new limitations make it much more complicated to use for these users at first, but may eventually make the process easier.

As we detailed in our article on how Netflix plans to tighten restrictions on sharing accounts and passwords, the service will make it increasingly difficult for people outside the primary household to use their Netflix accounts. This includes entering a verification code for access for up to 7 days and the need to connect to his Wi-Fi network on the main his site at least every 31 days.

Of course, Netflix can be used while traveling, and the company seems to have tools that won't pose a problem for mainstream home users looking to use their Netflix account on the go. The company says it verifies devices in your home by tracking the IP address, device ID, and account activity of devices signed into your Netflix account.

Indian users have been asked to fully migrate their existing profiles to the new paid memberships, while Netflix also launched paid sharing in various regions in May. However, there is no information on whether certain new options related to paid sharing will be available to users in India.

Netflix's subscription plans in India start at Rs 149 per month for mobile plans available only on portable devices and go up to Rs 649 per month for premium plans that allow users to access Ultra HD content on up to four devices simultaneously across mobile, TV, computer and streaming devices for Rs 649 per month. Please note that each plan account can have multiple user profiles and the limit only applies to the number of devices watching Netflix at the same time.
