Itanagar: In a significant legal reform, Arunachal Pradesh is set to implement three new criminal laws in both English and Hindi from July 1, according to an official statement on Friday. This change is due to the state's diverse range of dialects.
Arunachal Pradesh Chief Secretary Dharmendra confirmed that the Arunachal Police and the Law Department are diligently working towards the implementation of these new criminal laws by the specified date. These new laws will replace the Indian Penal Code (1860), the Indian Evidence Act (1872), and the Code of Criminal Procedure (1973), marking a major shift in the state's legislative framework.
During a meeting of the State Level Steering Committee (SLSC) on the implementation of the New Criminal Laws (NCL) at the Civil Secretariat on Thursday, the Chief Secretary reviewed the Action Taken Report (ATR) from the last SLSC meeting and discussed various decisions made.
The new criminal laws—Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (2023), Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (2023), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (2023)—were assented to by President Droupadi Murmu in December 2023. These laws will replace the colonial-era criminal laws currently in place.
The meeting also covered the status of the State Forensic Science Laboratory, the deployment of Mobile Forensic Vans, creation of manpower, the implementation of the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network & Systems (CCTNS), and the Inter-operable Criminal Justice System 2.0 (ICJS 2.0). Training for officers and other related issues were discussed in detail.
