New Delhi: Former Military Commander Lt Gen Manoj Mukund Narwana has been appointed as the next Deputy Chief of the Army. He will replace Lt Gen D Ambu, who is retiring on August 31.
According to the source, Lt Gen Narwana will also be a major contender for the post of Army Chief as he will be the most senior commander at the time of General Bipin Rawat's retirement on December 31. During his 37 years of service, he has been deployed in anti-terrorist operations as well as other military operations. He was commander of the National Rifle Battalion of Jammu and Kashmir and the Infantry Brigade of the Eastern Front.

In another important appointment, Lt Gen Anil Chauhan, Director General, Military Operations has been appointed as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Command. Lt Gen AS Clare has been made The General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the South-West Command, the source said. He will replace Lt. Gen. Cherish Matheson, who retires on August 31. Lt Gen IAS Ghuman has been appointed as General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Central Command. He will replace Lt Gen Abhay Krishna. Lt Gen R.P.Singh will replace West Command Chief Lt Gen Su Rinder Singh, who is retiring on July 31. He is currently the commander of 21 Strike Corp.
