COLOMBO: Get ready for a boost in luxury cruise ship visits in Colombo, as Sri Lanka's Port Authority gears up to handle the surge in tourists expected not just for the upcoming season but in the years to come. Plans are underway to convert the Bandaranaike Quay jetty in Colombo harbor temporarily, aiming to ensure smooth operations for passenger arrivals.

The decision comes as concerns arose regarding the current capacity and facilities available at the existing passenger terminal. Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Aviation, Nimal Siripala de Silva, has instructed officials to clear the space at Bandaranaike Quay, currently occupied by warehouses, to make room for a dedicated area to efficiently process the expected influx of tourists.

The Maritime Division of the Sri Lanka Port Authority has disclosed that approximately 35 luxury cruise liners are set to dock in Colombo during the upcoming holiday season. This surge indicates a substantial increase in cruise tourism. Furthermore, contracts have been sealed for numerous additional luxury ship visits in the forthcoming years, promising a continuous rise in tourist arrivals.

The move to repurpose the Bandaranaike Quay underscores Sri Lanka's proactive stance in catering to the escalating demand for cruise tourism. With these strategic preparations, Colombo is poised to become an even more inviting destination for travelers seeking a blend of luxury and cultural experiences.
