European Travel Costs Surge: Paris Taxes Up 200%, Venice Daily Fees Expected in 2024 Prepare for your European travel plans to potentially dent your wallet as several Schengen countries gear up to impose increased tourist taxes, aiming to recover from COVID-19 setbacks and bolster their revenue streams starting in 2024.

Various European hotspots are set to introduce a range of visitor taxes. Figueira da Foz in Portugal is among those implementing entry fees, citing the economic impact of the pandemic. Similarly, Paris and Amsterdam plan to escalate tourist taxes, while the UK intends to introduce a €7 fee for visitor applications. Here's a closer look at what's changing:

Paris, France
From January 2024, tourists visiting Paris will face a significant surge of nearly 200% in the tourist tax applicable to hotel stays. The move comes as policymakers greenlighted the increase, indicating that visitors in 2024 can anticipate a nightly fee of over €11 for a double room in a top-rated hotel.

Amsterdam, Netherlands
In parallel, authorities in Amsterdam have decided to raise the tax to 12.5% of the hotel room price, making it mandatory for all cruise passengers and overnight visitors to pay this levy.

SchengenVisaInfo.com calculations suggest that the tax for cruise-ship passengers will jump from €8 to €11 per visitor, imposed on a daily basis.

Venice, Italy
Commencing in 2024, Venice aims to introduce a daily fee for visitors, initiating a trial period during weekends in spring and summer.

Valencia, Barcelona, and Madrid, Spain
Valencia is gearing up to implement a tourist tax in early 2024 for accommodation stays, ranging between €0.50 and €2 per night based on the lodging type and duration.

Barcelona is also planning to hike tourist taxes, which have been in effect for visitors since 2018. The city's fees have increased from €3.25 to €3.75 in April 2023 and are expected to rise further to €3.20 in April 2024, marking a €0.50 hike.

The Spanish capital, Madrid, is contemplating a new tourist tax for 2024, although confirmation is pending.

United Kingdom (UK)
In 2024, the UK will introduce the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), mandatory for visitors from the US, Australia, Canada, and Europe. Traveling sans an ETA could result in fines.

Olhao, Faro, and Figueira da Foz, Portugal
Olhao, a popular tourist destination, will levy a €2 charge for visitors staying overnight between April and October, while those visiting between November and March will pay only half the price at €1 per night.

Faro will impose a tourist tax of €1.50 per person during the summer season (March to October), applicable for a maximum of seven nights, with exemptions for children under 12.

Figueira da Foz will roll out a municipal tourist tax based on the number of nights spent and the visit's season. Stays from October to March will cost €1.50 per night, while visits between April and September will incur a €2 nightly charge, as per SchengenVisaInfo.com.
